The Department for Transport has announced that Great Western Railway (GWR) will be nationalised on 13 December 2026, marking the 11th UK Government contract operator to transition to public ownership.
The Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, has confirmed that Great Western Railway's contract will end on 13 December 2026, with services transferring into public ownership.
