South Africa's health ministry reported that two passengers have died and a British national is in critical condition after a Netherlands-based cruise ship experienced a suspected hantavirus outbreak. The ship, carrying about 150 tourists, had departed Ushuaia, Argentina, for the Canary Islands approximately three weeks ago.
A Dutch-operated cruise ship, the MV Hondius, with nearly 150 people onboard—including 17 Americans—is stranded near Cape Verde after a suspected hantavirus outbreak led to three deaths and at least three others seriously ill. The ship, originally on a multi-week polar voyage from Argentina through Antarctica and remote South Atlantic islands, reported its first death on April 11. One confirmed case of hantavirus, a rare rodent-borne infection, is currently in intensive care in South Africa. The deceased include nationals from the Netherlands and Germany; two bodies remain onboard. Despite requesting help Sunday, no passengers or crew have been allowed to disembark in Cape Verde.

A British tourist is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care in South Africa following a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship sailing through the Atlantic Ocean, tour company Oceanwide Expeditions said. Three people have died and at least three others are ill, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a statement to The Associated Press.
A suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has killed three people and sickened at least three others, the World Health Organization said Sunday. In a statement to The Associated Press, the WHO said an investigation was underway but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. Hantavirus, found throughout the world, is spread by contact with urine or feces of infected rodents, most often rats or mice.
