At least 30 people were confirmed dead and dozens more missing following renewed gang violence in Petite-Rivière de l'Artibonite, Haiti. The Gran Grif gang attacked the town early Sunday and continued their assault into Monday, with reports of homes burned and bodies left on the streets. The gang remains in control of the Jean-Denis neighborhood, where they have erected roadblocks, making access and communication difficult. Human rights activists suggest the real death toll may be as high as 70. Haiti's National Police, with aid from Kenyan forces involved in a U.N.-backed mission, managed to rescue some residents, although gang-built road barricades hindered their efforts. The gang's previous attacks include the October 2024 massacre in Pont-Sondé, which killed over 70 people. The Gran Grif gang, the most powerful in Artibonite, was reportedly formed by Prophane Victor, a former parliamentarian, who armed local youths.
