Congo's Ebola outbreak has spread to a new health zone in the northeastern province of Ituri, authorities said on Wednesday, as fresh infections underline sustained transmission more than three weeks after the epidemic was declared.
The World Health Organization reports that the Ebola outbreak in Congo is outpacing containment efforts, with over 360 cases and 62 deaths confirmed. A new $518 million response plan has been launched to address the spread to new regions.
The Democratic Republic of Congo reports nearly 600 confirmed Ebola cases, with 22 patients having recovered. The disease has spread to 17 health zones in Ituri province and seven in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.
