Thousands more US Marines and sailors are heading towards the Middle East as the war with Iran is about to enter its fourth week. The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Boxer Amphibious Ready Group have had their deployment rerouted and accelerated and are now expected to go to the Middle East, two US officials told CNN.

Reports indicate that the U.S. is expected to deploy thousands of troops to the Middle East, as Iran blocks the world's most important point for oil. The deployment comes after Iran's response being more resilient than U.S. officials had expected.

The U.S. is deploying 2,200 Marines and three amphibious warships from Japan to the Middle East, led by the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group.
