Approximately 15 Latin American migrants deported from the United States arrived in Kinshasa, Congo, as part of a controversial third-country arrangement under the Trump administration's immigration policy. The deportees are currently staying in a Kinshasa hotel, and the International Organization for Migration is providing them with humanitarian aid and may offer voluntary return options.
The first group of migrants deported from the US has arrived in the Democratic Republic of Congo under a deal reached with Washington. The group includes nationals from Peru and Ecuador. Congo joined other African countries in accepting deportees as the US administration turned to Africa as a destination for migrants from the US.
The first migrants deported from the United States under a recent bilateral agreement arrived in Democratic Republic of Congo early on Friday. The plane carrying the deportees — from Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador — landed in Kinshasa at around 1 a.m. Congo's interior ministry and a spokesperson for the Congolese presidency did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
