Ali Shamkhani, a 70-year-old Iranian defense official, survived an Israeli strike on his Tehran home in June 2025 and has now been appointed to lead Iran's newly created Defense Council. The former Revolutionary Guard commander continues to play a central role in Iran's military strategy amid escalating tensions with the U.S. and Israel.

As tensions between Tehran and Washington enter a new phase of confrontation, Iran has chosen to bring back a familiar figure to project institutional continuity. On Feb. 5, Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was appointed head of the National Defense Council, a body officially reinstated on Aug. 3, 2025.
